St. Louis Cardinals play-by-play announcer Chip Caray accidentally uttered a homophobic slur on live television while promoting “Disability Pride Night” on July 10.
To make Chip Caray’s slip-up even more awkward, 30 seconds of silence in the broadcast booth ensued during the Cardinals-Cincinnati Reds afternoon game.
Caray was promoting the Cardinals’ Disability Pride Night event for July 10, when the club hosts the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium. Fans who purchase special tickets for the game will get a Cardinals with the Disability Pride Night flag.
While he was detailing the event, Chip Caray accidentally uttered a homophobic slur. After finishing the promotion, the Cardinals’ broadcast booth went quiet for 30 full seconds.
This wasn’t a “hot mic” moment like in 2020, when then-Reds announcer Thom Brennaman uttered a homophobic slur while on live TV, mistakenly believing that they were still on a commercial break.
Brennaman issued an apology moments later but was let go by Fox Sports soon after the incident. But since it was an accidental slip-up on Chip Caray’s end, it’s unlikely that he’ll be disciplined by his employers and the Cardinals organization.
Chip Caray Is In His Third Season With St. Louis Cardinals
The 60-year-old Caray became the new play-by-play voice of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023 following 18 years as the TV commentator for the Atlanta Braves.
Caray comes from a legendary broadcast family, as his grandfather Harry and father Skip were longtime announcers for the Cardinals and Braves, respectively. Caray’s son, Chris, is the play-by-play commentator of the Athletics.
