The Trump administration will begin revoking visas for some Chinese students, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday.
The State Department and the Department of Homeland Security will work “aggressively to revoke the visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” Rubio said in a statement.

He also said the department will review visa criteria to improve the evaluation of all future visa applications from China and Hong Kong.
China has the second-largest number of international students pursuing higher education in the United States in 2023/2024, with 277,398 students, according to the Institute of International Education.

Rubio ordered officials to stop scheduling appointments with student visa applicants while they prepare to implement a social media verification process.

“Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and verification, consular sections should not add any additional appointment capacity for student or exchange visitor visas (F, M, and J) until further guidance is issued, which we anticipate will occur in the coming days,” the cable states.
The Institute of International Education’s Open Doors data report revealed that in the 2023-2024 academic year, the United States welcomed a record 1.1 million international students, including approximately 10,000 British students.
These students generated $43.8 billion through tuition, room and board, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

During his first term, the Department of Education opened 19 investigations into foreign funding of U.S. universities and found they failed to report money from China, Russia, and other countries considered foreign adversaries.

The Department of Homeland Security raised similar issues in a letter banning international students from Harvard University last week.
Secretary Kristi Noem accused Harvard of coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party, citing research collaborations with Chinese academics. She also accused Harvard of training members of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a Chinese paramilitary group.
