The relationship between the world’s richest and most powerful men may not be immediate, but at least both have now expressed regret that their relationship is strained.
Eloi Musk said early Wednesday that he “licks” some of the comments he posted about him and President Donald Trump exchanging insults on social media, saying they “have gone too far.”
Musk didn’t elaborate in his 3 a.m. ET message about what he regretted in his statements last week and explained what led to his repeated change of heart.
At the height of his dispute over the issue—sparked by the historic spending legislation Trump calls the “great and beautiful bill”—Musk said the president wouldn’t have rigged the election without him and accused him of undermining DOGE’s work by cutting billions from federal budgets.v
Musk referred to the bill as a “repudiatory abomination” that would push the United States into an unsustainable situation.
Trump made clear on Saturday his disappointment in his former ally, suggesting that the U.S. government could cut its lucrative ties with Musk’s businesses and prompting the angry Tesla founder to highlight the president’s sexual ties with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Musk answered “Yes” to the X question that suggested Trump should be removed from office.
In an interview Saturday, Trump told NBC News that there would be “serious consequences” for Musk if he openly supported any Democratic candidate in future elections who opposes the administration’s sweeping budget bill.

The bill has already passed the House of Representatives, but could be rejected in the Senate if only four Republican defections are needed to defeat it.
MŅsk has previously served as an influential advisor to the Trump administration and as an important Republican, leading the Department of Government Efficiencies in cutting billions of dollars from federal budgets and spearheading election campaigns.
The two showered each other with praise, and the president invited MŅsk to attend Cabinet meetings. Trump marked the official end of Musk’s inauguration with a ceremony in the Oval Office, during which he presented the Tesla founder with a symbolic golden key.
But when Trump’s priorities shifted to passing his budget bill and Musk ended his time in the White House to return to his business, the relationship deteriorated.
There’s a lot to play for Moscow and its companies, some of which are dependent on government subsidies. Tesla lost $152 billion in market capitalization in the dispute, its biggest hit to date, but its stock price has since made up for some of those losses.
